The western cowboy-hat-styles of the past have contributed to the cowboy hats of the present.

According to the legend, John B. Stetson invented the cowboy hat in 1860 while on a hunting trip.

He was showing his friends that he could make a hat from his collection of beaver hide felt, with out weaving it.



Just like the photo on the left, John's hat had an unusually tall crown with a very wide brim.

This is were the term ten gallon hat come from.

By 1886 Stetson's hat company was the largest in the world.



There are five important cowboy hat styles today. The Cassidy crown, the Cattleman crown, the Gamber crown, the Gus crown, and the Telescope crown. These names refer to the crown, or top of the cowboy hats.

In years past, the cowboy-hat-styles were made out of beaver hide felt which was the only material available. Today you can purchase the cowboy hat of your choice in different types of felt such as wool, beaver, and sometimes buffalo.





Even though John Stetson's ten gallon hat had a very large brim, over the years, the brims of the cowboy hats have significantly changed. The average brims size ranges for 3 to 5 inches.

The Stetson hat company has many different colors and styles of cowboy hats to choose from. All you need to do is search for the one that fits your personality.




Another early Cowboy hat maker was E.R. Byer. He started his company in 1920.

Byer chose the name Resistol hats as his company name. He wanted the name to indicate that his cowboy hats could resist all weather conditions.

E.R.Byer's hat styles became so popular, that in 1922 the actor John Wayne begin to wear the resistol brand.

The Resistol company's cowboy hat styles include the ten gallon hat, the Cattleman crown, the Cassidy crown , and the Gus crown. Their cowboy hat brim sizes also range from 3 to 5 inches.

The Resistol company's felt hats are available in wool, beaver, buffalo, and straw. The color of the felt cowboy hats can be found in Brown, black, tan, and white.
