saddles, and other equipment you use on your horse is called tack. Western horse gear has its own style of tack.

bridle The first thing to discuss is the halter.

A halter is a collar made of leather or strong nylon. It gives you control over your horse when you are not riding him/her.

Most halters have a metal ring underneath the horses jaw, where you can clip a lead rope.

The lead rope is made of cotton or nylon. When attached it allows you to freely lead the horse around or tie it up.

They come in two main styles: A browband or slip-ear style. there is no noseband. They can be plain or decorated.

This is a slip-ear bridle. The photo shows the loop in the crown piece where the ear pokes through. It is decorated with white beads and silver coin-sized conchas this style of horse-riding-gear is gorgeous.

double ear bridle

Here is a browband bridle. It is plain, without any decoration.

The head stall fits behind the ears and across the head of the horse.

The bridle or headstall is fastened to a cheekpiece. Then attached to a bit ring outside the horse's mouth.

Bits are made of stainless steel, rubber, or nylon and come in different sizes. If a bit is too small, it pinches and hurts the horse's mouth. If it is too big it will not work properly.

There are hundreds to choose from. some bits are mild; others are strong and can hurt a horses mouth and cause them pain.

If you are just starting out or have a young horse it's best to use a mild bit, such as a snaffle bit.

Snaffle bits have two rings, which are attached to the bridle, and a mouthpiece, which is hinged to the rings.

unjointed snaffle bit This is a D-ring snaffle it is a single-jointed bit with rubber or metal mouthpiece. This is a super bit for a quiet or young horse.

full cheek snaffle This full cheek bit has 4- to 5-inch-long cheekpieces that put pressure on the side of the horse's mouth and cheek.

This gives the rider more steering power. If the horse has to turn, this is the bit you can use.

crib bit Most western riders, use a basis crub bit. This bit is made of metal and is usually unjointed. The crub bit has a raised port-a bump in the middle of the mouthpiece.

The higher the port the more severe the bit can be, because it can also affect the roof of the horse's mouth.

The crub bit in the photo has a port that is copper. This encourages the horse to salivate and accept the bit.
