It is unforgettable the first time you experience horseback-riding-rocky-mountain
The horseback-riding-rocky-mountain trails in Eastern Idaho have a variety of landscapes. It has about 22 mountain ranges, most of which is National Forest.

It also includes black lava, grotesque granite towers, multicolored cliffs, and spectacular turquoise colored water.
The trees range from pinion pine, juniper, and sagebrush.
The best thing about Idaho's National Forest is that there are many places for riding horses that don't have day permits and user fees.
My husband and I have several favorite areas that we love to ride horses.
One is Island Park Idaho where history seemed to have happened only yesterday.
Most of the National Forest remain the same as it was a hundred of years ago.
The photo to the left, is a picture of Swan Lake in Island Park. It is a scenic attraction because of the trumpeter swans and their nests.
As long as there is an area to pull off your truck and horse trailer on highway 20 north of the Ashton hill, you can unload your
horses
and hit the trail.
At the left I have provided a road map for you to use on your horseback riding trip.
If your
travel
north from Idaho Falls on highway 20 continue going north until you reach the Ashton Ranger Station.
Then turn right onto highway 47 and follow it until your reach Mesa Falls.
Your can walk the trails or ride your horse. You can unloaded your horse at the Warm River campground.
If you are traveling south on highway 20 then you will pass the Forest Ranger Station on the left side of the road as well as the small town of Last Chance.
A few miles past Last Chance there is a left turn off that is clearly marked Mesa Falls. Stay on this road until you reach the falls. You can unload your horses at the beginning of the road or any turn out along this road.
The photos above show the gorgeousness of the area around the falls. This horseback-riding-rocky-mountain trail is well worth the time. If you decided to ride farther back into the wilderness to camp, feel free to do so.
Here is another horseback-riding-rocky-mountain trail map that shows other interesting and beautiful sites to see in the mesa falls area.
A good place to visit is the fish hatchery and warm springs. Three miles from the Warm River camp ground, The railroad bed trail crosses road 150.
Remember to stay on the side of the road because just after this intersection is a half mile of private land.
A half mile later the trail crosses road 154, which is the Warm River Fish Hatchery road. Take this road for about one mile, there is a large spring that is 50 to 60 degrees, it pours out of the mountain side and flows into the warm river. This is how the river got its name.
The old fish hatchery building are adjacent to the springs and there is a cabin available to rent, year round.
One of the most important thing I want you to remember about
riding horses
in Island Park is the large areas that are available to just stop, take out you horses, and ride for a day or days. If thats want you want to do.
As you see by the map on the left highway 20 give you easy access to all most all of Island Parks lakes, streams, and forests. Places like Island Park Reservoir, Henrys Lake, Buffalo River, Big Springs as well as many other gorgeous places.
Let this map be you guide. Most of the places listed above have clearly marked, exit roads, that can be seen as you travel up or down highway 20. Feel free to leave the highway and explore.
This is a picture of the Buffalo River that you can ride into when you come to visit Island Park.
This river is mostly spring-fed and is crystal clear nearly year-round. Just follow the map above.
This photo is a striking picture of Henrys Lake. This lake lies less than 10 miles across the continental divide from southwest Montana.
This lake provides the headwaters of the Henrys Fork river, which contributes water to the Snake River.
The horseback-riding-rocky-mountain trip can start at Henrys Lake and continue on into the nearby Targee National Forest.
These are only just a few areas to ride horse in Island Park. There are still some wilderness areas that have not yet be explored on horse back.
If you are planning a horseback-riding-rocky-mountain trip for more than a day and don't want to camp out, then there are nice log cabins and motel rooms to rent in Island Park.
All you need to do is plan the trip, load the horses, and come to Idaho for a fantastic horse ride. See you soon.
