In the past, the technique for how-to-build-a-cabin was a very primitive process. The materials for the cabin were gathered from the forest and the surrounding area.

This Montana cabin belonged to my husbands grandparents, Elmer and Maria and was built in 1917. The trees were hand cut from the forest and horses were used to pull the limbless trees back to the homestead.
Elmer and his wife fashioned the trees into handcrafted logs. The logs were stacked one at a time until the house reach the desired height. The space between the log was filled with mixed manure and mud.
The roof was then constructed of log, mud and sod. The window and door frames were hand cut. The cabin doors were made from the same wood but the windows had to be ordered at the local hardware store. Over the years thing have changed considerably.
